Women in the United States earned the right to vote in national elections 100 years ago this year when Congress passed and then states ratified the 19th Amendment in 1920.
This right to vote, available to wealthy white men from 1776 on, all white men from the 1820s, and black men (technically) from 1865 on took even longer for women to obtain. The fight lasted decades (and it would be accurate to say centuries), costing many women their freedoms, rights, reputations, and families. Director Katja von Garnier captures the courage and cost of the women's suffrage movement in its last decade in her film Iron Jawed Angels. Von Garnier’s film focuses on the non-violent strategies of Alice Paul and Lucy Burns. Please encourage students to attend and join Professors Beth Rodacker, Michelle Hart, and Jenny Grohol for an introduction, viewing, and discussion of the film. We will host screenings at both our BC Main Campus, Levan Center on March 2nd as well as at our Delano Campus, DST 118 on March 3rd.
