Women's History Month: A History

General Announcement:

Thirty years ago President Jimmy Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8, 1980, as the first National Women’s History Week.  In 1987 Congress expanded the celebration from a week into a month, and March is now National Women’s History Month.

Since the 1980s, Bakersfield College has participated in the countrywide effort to recognize the historical accomplishments of women with a month-long series of programs presented by local and regional leaders among women.

Women’s History and More Month at Bakersfield College organizes an array of programs that are open and free to the public. This year, Women’s History and More (WHAM) pays special tribute to international women in the world. With President Obama and a bi-partisan committee of senators preparing to argue the merits of immigration reform, targeting the issue of more than 11 million people in the United States without citizenship or legal status, our first event about citizen-subjects who become Dream Activists is particularly timely. Additionally, international women will host two different panel events, one that addresses opportunities and obstacles for international students at Bakersfield College and another that addresses the same issues for women in Bakersfield’s professional community. Our final event, “Pray the Devil back to Hell,” explores the role of women in Liberia’s civil war.

All events are free, open to the public, and held at Bakersfield College's main campus on Panorama Drive. Free parking.

Here at Bakersfield College, we affectionately refer to Women's History and More as W.H.A.M.

Showing and discussion of “Pray the Devil Back to Hell”
Monday, March 11, 2013, Forum East, 6:30- 8:00 pm

Moderator: Elizabeth Rodacker

“Pray the Devil Back to Hell is the extraordinary story of a small band of Liberian women who came together in the midst of a bloody civil war, took on the violent warlords and corrupt Charles Taylor regime, and won a long-awaited peace for their shattered country in 2003….A story of sacrifice, unity and transcendence, Pray the Devil Back to Hell honors the strength and perseverance of the women of Liberia. Inspiring, uplifting, and most of all motivating, it is a compelling testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations.” Description from websitehttp://praythedevilbacktohell.com/
